RHYTHM & PLAY

A weekly 45-minute Music and Movement workshop for children ages 5-8.

This class is an exploration of sound, rhythm and dance through creative movement exercises. Based on Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a technique taught in music schools all across Europe, the emphasis is on concepts of rhythm, structure, and music expression using movement. Students are able to gain physical awareness and experience of music through training that takes place through all of the senses, particularly kinesthetic. This way the student fosters a practical, physical experience of music before they theorize and perform, ensuring the whole person (not just the fingers and the brain) is educated in the development of musicianship. Creative dance costumes are not necessary, but always encouraged.

SKETCHING WITH SOUND

In this course we will explore the art of songwriting.

Through games, singing, discussion, and exercises, we will explore components of basic songwriting: story, rhythm, rhyme, lyrics, and melody. Where do song ideas come from? What makes our favourite songs so special? How do words find a way into our hearts and memories forever? Let’s look at traditional folk songs, popular music, and then write our own to find out!
